As I head for trial starting next Monday in Los Angeles Superior Court defending a nonprofit corporation against claims made by former members, I am reminded of how important it is to “do the right thing”.
Litigation always seems to me a gigantic waste of time, money and emotions. And it makes me reflect on why I enjoy Estate Planning as the primary area of my legal practice.
Clients who carry out a well thought out Estate Plan are essentially doing the right thing. Estate planning is in reality an act of stewardship. Knowing that “you can’t take it with you”, motivates clients to consider their family and friends, and their assets, and then set in place a plan for the orderly transfer of those assets upon death.
Many clients after the execution of their Estate Plan will express relief and “peace of mind”. I believe they feel this way because they are “doing the right thing” for themselves and their family.
I think this is why I like the practice of Estate Planning.
